Foundation Options for Sheer to Light Coverage

Foundation Options for a Sheer to Light Coverage

Foundation comes in all types of formulas and several different coverages. You have your full coverage, medium, light, and sheer. Which one works best for you? Well, that depends on your skin needs. I remember when I first started doing makeup I always went for the full coverage foundations and I used it all over my face, even in places where I didn’t even need it. Full coverage foundation definitely came in handy when I suffered from acne, but now that my skin is clear and healthy, I opt for a lighter, more natural looking coverage. Nowadays, a natural, glowing makeup look is what’s in and I’m all about enhancing beauty by only using products when and where they’re needed.

Here are some of my favorite sheer to light foundations that have my skin looking flawlessly natural.

NARS Sheer Glow Foundation – $34

This is one of my all-time favorite foundations. Yup, I said it. All. Time. Favorite. I love how light it feels and how it leaves your skin with a natural looking glow. I like a little more coverage in certain areas of my face so I layer for a not so sheer, but light coverage. Plus, this foundation is non-comedogenic and packed with antioxidants to help improve the overall texture of your skin. Perfect for acne prone and sensitive skin types.

Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer – $45

Ok, I may be cheating here because this isn’t necessarily a foundation, but I always say there are no rules in makeup. Laura Mercier sure knows a thing or two about skin and I love a product that has multiple uses. This tinted moisturizer gives you a sheer, buildable coverage for a natural, “no-makeup” look that lasts all day. Not what you’d expect from a tinted moisturizer, huh? Perfect for dry and dehydrated skin types.

MAC Face & Body Foundation – $38

MAC’s Face & Body foundation should be called “skin in a bottle”. This silky foundation glides on almost as if you’re applying new skin (if that makes sense). It provides a light, feathery, barely there finish. Every time I wear it, I get compliments on my SKIN, not my makeup, but my SKIN. “Ha! They don’t even know I’m wearing makeup”. Perfect for all skin types, however it does have a dewy finish, so may not be as perfect for oily skin types.

Motives Dual Mineral Foundation – $32

I haven’t always been a fan of powder foundations, but this one has been a stable in my kit all summer long. I love the versatility and color range it offers along with the fact that it’s made with aloe vera, absorbs oil, and minimizes the appearance of pores. This foundation can be used wet or dry. For a light coverage simply use you powder brush and for more coverage use the handy sponge included. However, I rarely use the sponge because you can build coverage even with your powder brush. Perfect for oily skin types. Also try: LORAC POREfection Baked Perfecting Powder.

Fenty Beauty by Rihanna Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation $34

And last, but definitely not least, is the most talked about foundation from beauty professionals and every day beauties is Rihanna’s new Pro Filt’r foundation. Rihanna rocked us with her debut into the makeup world just like she does with damn near ever album she releases. I typically don’t go out and grab the newest makeup on the block because  – A. It’s not in my budget and B. I tend to stick to what I know works for me, but I kept hearing so much about this foundation, I just had to try it. And, oh am I glad I did. Although, it’s not labeled as a sheer or light foundation (it provides a medium coverage), it wears very light and natural looking on the skin. It literally looks like you just walked out of a magazine with it’s photo-finished appearance, but no photoshop or filters here, ladies. It’s all in the makeup. I’m not mad I got this one and I predict it to be a stable in my makeup kit for a while. Thanks, Rihanna!

LYB Bonus Tip: To sheer out a medium to full coverage liquid/cream foundation just take a little of your moisturizer and mix it in with your foundation before applying it. To make a powder foundation more sheer simply use a big powder brush to apply instead of a sponge or foundation brush.
